Lactatropin
Lactatropin is recombinant bovine Somatotropin (rbST), a synthetic version of bovine Somatotropin (bST).

In lactating dairy cattle, bST is a naturally occurring protein hormone and major regulator of milk production. Lactatropin (known as Posilac in the U.S.) is the first rbST on the market and the ONLY rbST that is approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The World Health Organization (WHO) certifies and recommends the use of rbST.

What can Lactatropin do for you?

Supplementing a healthy cow with Lactatropin, combined with good farm management and adequate feed, can increase milk production to an average of 4,5 liters more milk per day over a full lactation. Lactatropin helps cows produce more using fewer resources per liter of milk, thus reducing production cost by 3-5%.

What about the Environment?

The carbon footprint of dairy production is reduced when milk yield per cow is increased. The use of rbST allows each cow to produce about 4.5kg of extra milk per day, resulting in an 8-9% reduction in the carbon "hoofprint" per liter of milk.

In simple terms: six rbST-treated cows equal 7 untreated cows.

Using rbST allows milk supply to be produced with smaller herds and less feed, land and water as well as reduced soil erosion and use of herbicides and pesticides.

Smaller herds also mean less fossil fuel and electricity required for operations and reduced output of manure and animal waste.

Environment
Injecting 50% of South Africa's dairy herd
(± 275,000 cows) equals the annual removal of 110,000 cars from the roads or planting 82.5 million trees.

How does Lactatropin work?

In healthy cows, rbST increases milk production and is injected during week 9-10 of the lactation cycle (peak) and continued bi-weekly until the end of lactation. rbST is metabolized in the liver where Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) is released and circulated to milk duct tissues where it coordinates cellular growth and function.

rbST increases the efficient use of nutrients by keeping milk producing cells alive and active longer - resulting in higher lactation persistency and milk yield.
