Blu-Vax is an inactivated adjuvanted polyvalent bluetongue virus (BTV) vaccine, formulated as an emulsion, for the active immunisation of healthy sheep against bluetongue disease.
Bluetongue is a controlled disease in terms of the Animal Diseases Act (Act no. 35 of 1984) and any suspicion or confirmation of the disease must be reported to the responsible state veterinarian immediately.
COMPOSITION PER DOSE (1 ml)
Blu-Vax is an oil emulsion vaccine containing multiple inactivated serotypes of the bluetongue virus (BTV).
STORAGE
Store and transport refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from high temperatures and sunlight during vaccination. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the container.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE - USE ONLY AS DIRECTED
Please consult with your veterinarian before use.
- Simple inversion of the vial prior to and during use is adequate to mix all components.
- Inject sheep subcutaneously on the side of the neck. DO NOT deviate from the recommended route and injection site location.
- Animals must receive a full vaccination schedule before the period of highest risk associated with bluetongue outbreak.
- Ensure that all animals are vaccinated.
- It is essential to adhere to the vaccination programme to maintain a satisfactory immune response.
- This inactivated vaccine is safe for use in ewes during all stages of pregnancy and newborn lambs born from unvaccinated ewes.
- This inactivated vaccine does not affect semen production and is safe for use in breeding rams.
- Vaccination with Blu-Vax allows targeted use in the face of an outbreak or in case of perceived immediate threat of infection.
- DO NOT miss the booster dose as it is essential to elicit protective immunity.
- Repeat vaccination annually according to the DOSAGE instructions.
DOSAGE
- Administer a single dose (1 ml) subcutaneously, on the side of the neck only. DO NOT deviate from the recommended route and injection site location.
- A second dose of 1 ml must be administered 3 to 4 weeks later as a booster to complete the vaccination.
- Animals that have never been vaccinated before, will benefit from a second booster dose of 1 ml 3 to 4 weeks after the first booster.
- Vaccination and both boosters (where applicable) must be completed 2 months prior to the outbreak season.
